Tax & Bookkeeping FAQs
Quick answers to common tax and bookkeeping questions. Still unsure? Reach out and we’ll guide you.
What is tax-ready bookkeeping?
Tax-ready bookkeeping means your financial records are categorized and reconciled so your CPA can file directly without reconstruction. It includes accurate expense categorization, 1099 contractor tracking, and a year-end package with your P&L, balance sheet, and general ledger. Startup Books USA keeps your books tax-ready year-round. Tax return filing is handled by your CPA or tax preparer.
Do you offer tax planning or tax filing?
No. Startup Books USA does not file tax returns or provide tax planning. We work with your CPA or tax advisor by keeping your books accurate, organized, and tax-ready year-round, making filing faster and reducing errors.
Can bookkeeping help during tax season?
Yes – tax-ready bookkeeping makes tax season faster and easier. We categorize expenses correctly, track 1099 contractor payments, and provide a complete year-end package your CPA can file from directly. Without it, many CPAs spend valuable time reconstructing your books before preparing your tax return.
Do you track and file 1099s?
We track every contractor payment against the $600 IRS filing threshold and provide the data your CPA or 1099 filing service needs, but the actual filing of 1099 forms is typically handled by your CPA or a dedicated payroll/1099 platform. On Growth and Scale plans, 1099 tracking is included year-round.
What does a tax-ready year-end package include?
A tax-ready year-end package includes a full-year Profit & Loss statement, a Balance Sheet, a categorized general ledger, and a 1099 contractor payment summary. Everything is categorized according to standard tax categories, reconciled against your bank and credit card statements, and reviewed for accuracy before delivery.
How is this different from hiring a CPA?
A CPA files your tax return and can advise on tax strategy; we keep the underlying books accurate so that return is fast and cheap to prepare. Most startups need both: a bookkeeper year-round and a CPA at filing time. Skipping the bookkeeper doesn’t remove the work – it just shifts it onto your CPA, who bills at a much higher hourly rate to do it.
